Leopard Class

Welcome to Leopard Class

with Mr Boyles!

September 2017

Dear Parents,

Welcome to the new school year in Leopards!

This term and next, our main topic will be The Mayan Civilisation; we will spend time in history lessons looking at everyday life for the Mayans, as well as their religion, their discovery and their eventual downfall. In Geography lessons we will look at the countries of Central America and compare their climate to our own.

In Science, our topic is Light and How We See Things.

In English, we will be reading Stormbreaker by Anthony Horowitz and many of our lessons will be based upon this exciting text. It is extremely important that every child reads every day at home. Every child should have a book that they are reading at all times and I would like them to record their progress in their reading records which needs to be signed by parents each day. The book they read can be chosen from the school library or it may be one from home. It is helpful if the book they read at home is brought to school each day as well. It is useful for some children to hear parents reading to them as well; if your child is a reluctant reader or one that is struggling with fluency, then it is important for them to listen and respond to texts that are appropriate for their age group.

The following sites contain a great list of age appropriate books that you may wish to choose from:

Year 5: goo.gl/QfQt4T

Year 6: goo.gl/7NQ4zo

I have also attached some example questions that you can ask your child during or after reading.

I will send home spellings to be learned each week on Friday; the children will be tested the following Friday. They will also have a tables test each week – also on Friday. By the end of Year 4, all children are expected to know their tables up to 12×12 off by heart. For any children struggling with this vital skill, I will be providing additional support in the classroom and also speak with individual parents to suggest activities that can be done at home each day.

Homework is usually sent out on Fridays and needs to be returned by the following Thursday at the latest.

Please come and speak to me if you have any concerns. I can be contacted via the school office and I am at the playground gate each afternoon.

Yours sincerely

P Boyles
