Welcome to Giraffe Class
with Mrs Macfarlane!
Welcome to Giraffe Class! We hope you had a wonderful summer and your children are looking forward to being in Year 1!
Our Topic theme this autumn is “A step back in time”. We shall begin by learning about “The Great Fire of London” and continue learning about Great Monarchs of England. We shall learn about the timeline of events, buildings of the time, food people would have eaten as well as learning about fire safety. We have an exciting Topic Day planned for the children on Tuesday 12th September and would love it if the children could come into school in a costume from the 17th Century. This could be a kitchen boy/girl or a King or Queen for example. Children who would prefer not to dress up are welcome to come to school in their own clothes. If you have the chance to visit your local library to carry out further research with your child please send it in for us to share with everyone.
This term we shall re-cap the phonics sounds learnt in Lion Class and begin the Year 1 sounds. We shall also assess the children to ensure their knowledge is secure.
Your children will come home this week with their new Reading Books and Records. The key to making good progress in Year 1 is Reading. This in turn will help your child to write. Please can you read with your child for a short time each day as it will really help their confidence, develop their vocabulary and their level of comprehension.
This term’s Maths focus is developing children’s knowledge of numbers up to 20. We shall be counting daily, learning our number bonds up to 20 and adding and subtracting. We shall use objects to help our counting and solve problems together.
Book Changing Day will be spread throughout the week and your child’s particular day is written in the front of their Reading Record. Please can you send Reading Books in daily as your child will read with an adult during the week. Giraffes will visit the school Library on Fridays when they will have the opportunity to borrow a book.
Your child will come home with their Learning Journal on Friday. We have put a short note inside to explain how we would like it to be used. Weekly homework will be stuck into this book and sent home on Fridays. We would like it to be returned on the following Thursday please.
Your child will receive spellings to learn this year. Spellings will be a mixture of the first 100 High Frequency Words, many of which do not follow spelling rules and need to be learnt off by heart. The other words will follow a spelling rule. A good method is to practise spellings “little and often” (maybe after breakfast?) to give children time to consolidate them before their test. Spelling tests will be on Thursdays.
This term in Science we shall be learning about the world around us. We shall begin by preparing our garden for some winter planting, identifying local trees and plants on a nature walk and considering our change in weather and seasons.
Please can we ask that children keep their Sissinghurst school book bags. They are a practical size for us to store and access quickly in the classroom.
The Giraffe Class Timetable along with the weekly planning can be found on our Class Page on KLZ.
If you have any queries or concerns, please do not hesitate to come and speak to us.
