Welcome to Giraffe Class
with Mrs Macfarlane!
Dear Giraffe Parents
We hope you had a great break over the Easter Holidays!
Our Topic this term is, “The Carnival of the Animals”, inspired by the music of Saint-Saёns. We will be learning about Saint-Saёns himself, the formation of an orchestra and different animals around the world. Our stunning starter day will be on Wednesday 25th April when children may come into school dressed as an animal, explorer or in their own clothes.
We are working towards our Phonics screening check in June. We shall practise using our phonics to sound out nonsense and actual words. If you wish to practise these with your child there are many sample papers on the internet and I have loaded one onto our class page on KLZ. Please can you continue to practise your child’s phonics sounds – using the Sissinghurst Sounding book and any additional flashcards your child has been given.
In English we shall begin by learning about the tale of Saint George and the Dragon. We will design and describe our own dragons, learn a narrative using Talk For Writing techniques and write our own dragon stories. After this we shall consider what it means to be a Superhero and design and write our own Superhero stories.
In Maths we shall be focusing on Place Value, addition, subtraction, recognising coins and using money. We shall be outside measuring heights, weights and water capacity as well as continuing our work on telling the time to o’clock and half-past. We shall also be practising our number bonds for numbers within 20 and our 2, 5 and 10 Times Tables.
In RE we will be learning about Judaism. We shall think about special meal times we have and compare it to Shabbat. We shall also learn about the symbolism of the Mezuzah and the Star of David.
In Science we shall be planting flowers and vegetables in our outdoor area and discussing the importance of a healthy diet. We shall be identifying and classifying animals into their scientific groups. We shall also discuss how the seasons change and the impact it has on our wildlife.
Please keep up the great work you are doing with your child with their Reading, Spellings and Homework. Your support is greatly appreciated and is extremely important to your child’s progress.
If you have any queries or concerns, please do not hesitate to come and speak to us.
