Our Curriculum

At Sissinghurst our curriculum has been designed with our school family in mind and what we believe our children need to thrive and be successful citizens who make a difference to each other and to the wider community and beyond. The Sissinghurst Curriculum offers pupils a progression of skills and knowledge underpinned by a strong focus on oracy and reading as core skills which enable pupils to access the curriculum and develop confidence in communication.

Our school values and our belief that all children are entitled to a curriculum which is well planned, progressional and relevant to prepare them for their futures is at the heart of all we do. We want our children to be motivated to learn, to be courageous in their perseverance and to recognise their own successes.

No time in educational history has been more important than now to develop these aspects of the curriculum. Our children need to be ready, creative, courageous and to aspire to unravel the challenges that change will bring. We are privileged to be the stewards of this new generation of pupils, growing and learning at Sissinghurst Primary.

Deuteronomy 31:6 "Be strong. Take courage. Don't be afraid because God, your God, is striding ahead of you. He's right there with you. He won't let you down; he won't leave you.

Sissinghurst Stepping Stones Curriculum

Our curriculum is planned for each subject area in a progressional pathway which we call the Sissinghurst Stepping Stones. The Stepping Stones show a tangible path of progression in our foundation and core subjects. Each stone details the skills, knowledge and vocabulary that will be built on in order to create a rounded, deep understanding of the subject by the time our children leave Sissinghurst Primary. Teachers use the Stepping Stones both in planning and delivering lessons.

Stepping Stones for each subject area give teachers and children a clear distinction between key aspects of their learning – knowledge, skills and vocabulary – which allows links to be made, and progression to build sequentially and successfully, resulting in children who have excellent subject knowledge that is established in long term-memory.

Our spiritual curriculum which we call the Leaves of Learning, runs alongside and underpins our Stepping Stone curriculum. The Leaves of Learning are based on the school values of Service, Kindness, Courage and Forgiveness.

The model of learning at Sissinghurst shows how the Leaves of Learning are  wrapped around the whole curriculum.

Our Unique Curriculum

Throughout your learning journey here with us at Sissinghurst Primary, we want you to GROW as a learner and as an individual.

1 John 3:18, "Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth."

We know how important it is for our pupils to learn through DOING.

We have created our leaves of learning organically from our school vision and the four values that are the foundation of everything we do here at Sissinghurst.

The leaves of learning are concepts for the 21st century and post pandemic realm. Concepts that will prepare each one of our learners for life in all its fullness, after they leave our school family and venture into the world.

Our leaves of learning enrich our curriculum by offering experiences and opportunities to broaden your child’s learning to include character development, self-exploration, resilience, compassion, self-confidence and more. Throughout your child’s time at Sissinghurst they will complete activities related to the leaves of learning in a '60 things to do before you leave Sissinghurst Primary School' personalised passport. Learning in the thematic Learning Journeys will include signposts to specific leaves where links are clear. For example, when learning about The Great Fire of London, this will link with the leaves of COMMUNITY, LEADERSHIP and TEAMWORK. These links allow our pupils to think more deeply about concepts that affect us globally, and create links between learning journeys as they progress through to Year 6.

At no time in history has been more important than now to develop this aspect of the curriculum.

Our world needs our children to be ready, creative, courageous and to aspire to rise to the challenges that this will bring.

We at Sissinghurst are privileged to be the stewards of this new generation of learner.

Deuteronomy 31:6

"Be strong. Take courage. Don't be afraid because God, your God, is striding ahead of you. He's right there with you. He won't let you down; he won't leave you."

Learning Journeys

At Sissinghurst Primary School, we are passionate about delivering a broad and creative curriculum that goes beyond the core subjects.

Learning journeys are implemented and give children the opportunity to learn about a topic in depth, from a variety of angles. The children embark on their learning journey by beginning with a 'Stunning Starter'. They then have a 'Marvellous Middle' which often includes a trip of visit to school. They then conclude their journey with a 'Fabulous Finish' which includes the children sharing what they have learnt with parents and the wider school community.

Curriculum Overview: About Us

Term 3

We're Going on a Bear Hunt

Our Stunning Start will commence with a very adventurous expedition, which will involve the children going on a bear hunt around the school grounds. The children will need to follow a map, prepare their own survival kit and follow clues on the way. Additionally, they will need to bring in their own Teddy Bear for the first day of term. Marvellous Middle Bears are not just about cuddly teddy bears! We will be learning about real bears in our world and have the opportunity to interview our resident expert (Mrs Walker) about bears in Canada. Fabulous Finish  will end with a teddy bear picnic where the children will make the food and invite their Teddy Bears.

Term 4

Down At The Farm

Our topic for this term will be ‘Down on the Farm’, which will include learning about the different animals and their young on a farm. It will also include types of crops grown and the food that comes from a farm.

The children will be working hard this term to master writing simple sentences without the need for scaffold lines and will use their phonic knowledge to sound the words they want to write. Please continue to support them with their writing at home making sure they are forming their letters correctly and have plenty of opportunities for writing.

Term 5

The Secret Garden

Our topic for this term will be ‘The
Secret Garden’ and the children will
be learning about the different minibeasts and how plants grow.
During the first week we will read
the story of Wangari’s Tree of
Peace and talk about the growth of
trees. This will lead on to our Stunning Start in Forest School, where
the children will look closely at the
local trees and even climb the trees.

Spring Term

The Big Chill

We will be researching information about polar bears, penguins and other polar animals. We will look at how they can live in the coldest places on earth. This is known as adaptation. We will be learning about a famous Arctic explorer from the past; Ernest Shackleton.

For our Marvellous Middle event, we will be visited by an ice sculptor in school. Children will have the opportunity to use chisels to sculpt their own ice shape!
